Not sure exactly what is making you feel like a third wheel. You state a friend of yours starting dating someone. Then you state that the three of you hang out together. If the three of you are all hanging out together, how are they leaving you out? To answer your question, I have never felt like a third wheel. If my friends didn't want me to go or be with them, then they wouldn't ask me in the first place.
I am single and have a friend who is with someone. She is pretty fun & down to earth though and they are not all lovey dubbie all the time. Perhaps if they were constanly groping each other and I was off to the side just waiting for it to be over then that would be awkward.
