The skies above Lapland, Finland, have been lit up with a spectacular display from the northern lights.

Time lapse footage captured magical images of the phenomenon, which is caused by charged gas particles that flow away from the Sun as a solar wind then interact with the Earth's magnetic field.

Scientist say Earth is currently being bombarded by high-energy particles unleashed by the strongest solar storm since 2005.

I love the way the northern (and southern) lights look. I've had a fascination with them since I read The Golden Compass many years ago, and hope one day to see them in person. The only problem is, I hate cold weather. I'd put up with it to see them though.

Also, last I heard it was 2003, have they recalculated it?

Too bad I can't see them... stupid clouds <.<
