I prefer a mix of both I suppose. There is duds from both genre's of course.
 
It all comes down to individual perception of what beautiful is, what art is. A subjective reality is something you can not discuss with others. For instance, I care not what period in history we are talking about as long as it is hyperrealism.

No, not really. There are people in todays world that are just as good as the ones hundreds of years ago.
 
A friend of my wife's is an "industrial accident" style painter.

She has been paid thousands of dollars for something that looked like the floor in an elementary school art room.

That's NOT art.
