Well, since we had a thread about showers I thought we'd have one about toilets.

But these aren't going to be your gerneral run of the mill 'loo', 'water closet', or 'head'.

the world's finest scientists and inventors have been applying their technological know-how to the unglamorous but important issue, and coming up with some ingenious solutions.

In 2011, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation launched the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge, awarding $3.2m in grants to promising entrants.

The conditions were tough. Designs had to be hygienic, sustainable, cheap to operate, and capable of working off-grid - without connections to water, electricity, or sewerage networks.

What kind of 'Porcelain Throne' do you have at your place?

The options range from high efficiency Vacuum asist to an outhouse over a pit in the ground.

KOHLER Cimarron White High Efficiency Watersense Elongated Single 2-Piece Toilets:

  • Quiet-Close® seat and lid with Quick-Release® hinges allows seat to close quietly, unlatch from the toilet for easy cleaning and features unique rubber bumpers that help prevent the seat from shifting
  • Patented flushing technology provides tremendous bulk waste flushing performance and best-in-class bowl cleanliness
  • Canister flush valve provides smooth flushing actuation with consistent water usage, flush after flush
  • DryLock® attachment plate reduces installation time, as well as prevents potential leak points during the installation and throughout the life of the product
  • 1.28 GPF high-efficiency toilets provide significant water savings without sacrificing performance
  • With a seat height comparable to that of a standard chair, KOHLER Comfort Height® toilets make sitting down and standing up easier for people of all ages

I really love the fact the lid comes off as it makes cleaning so much easier. I also like the comfort height design.

Of the three we have, the most reliable one is in the RV.

The new toilet in the house is from the 80's in the 'new addition' to the house built just before we moved in. The tank bolts routinely leak (and have been replaced three times), it is hard to clean, and feels flimsy when you take it apart.

The old one is a Mighty Ferguson grade American Standard, probably from the sixties if it isn't older. You couldn't crack the material with a sledgehammer and it comes clean with almost no effort. But it takes at least five gallons per flush.
