For those unfamiliar with Toys for Tots, here is there Mission statement:

The mission of the program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

The stated goal is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

The red barrels are all over the place in my town. I placed a few presents in one the other day. I'll get a few more too.

Questions:

Do they do this where you live?

Do you put a gift/gifts in the barrels?

Oh, yeah.....

We did a toy drive for them for a dozen years or so....

And then the local store that had allowed it got stupid, we moved it to a 'big box store' which was a nightmare and ended up being more of a bust than a 'drive'.

2012 is the first year since the late 90's that the group I was part of didn't do it.

This was the 2010 drive, the last truly successful one:

This picture is from the 2003 drive that may have been the largest we did

I'll still make a donation, but it will be 'a toy', not 'a carload':

[background=rgb(251, 253, 254)]That's a shame and I hope people boycotted that big box store. I know I would if I knew what they did. [/background]

And the needy children suffer because of it. They should be ashamed of themselves!
