A train has derailed in north-western Spain, killing at least 77 of its 218 passengers and injuring more than 100, officials in the Galicia region say.

All eight carriages of the Madrid to Ferrol train came off the tracks near the city of Santiago de Compostela.

Media reports say the train may have been travelling at more than twice the speed limit around a curve.

Officials have not commented on the cause. Analysts say it is the worst train accident in Spain in 40 years.

Just heard about this on the news, and it's really sad. Just as bad as the train crash that happened at Brétigny-sur-Orge, France two weeks ago. It is said that speeding may have caused this but investigations are going underway, even with the train driver being questioned. Also, there will be a three-day mourning as said by its Prime Minister. So sad... :(

I heard this on the news a little while ago. It appears the speed for that turn was 50 MPH. The train driver/drivers (as they think there were two), took that turn at 119 MPH.

I've been closely following this story as it worried me, because, there is only 3 reasons as to why THEY (The Drivers) couldn't or didn't notice it was a 50mph piece of track,

- Human Error
- Train Fault
- Computer Error

It's annoying because here in the United Kingdom our trains flag up the speedlimits and if we as drivers go over them the train's computer brain STOPS the train automaticly, it seems that this didn't happen...

Could this be a problem across all train networks or just the itallians...

UPDATE: Spain Train Crash: Driver formally detained

The driver of a train that derailed on Wednesday killing 78 people has been formally detained, Spanish police say.

The driver, who was injured and is under guard in hospital, is accused of "crimes related to the accident", they say.

There are reports that the train was travelling at more than double the speed limit at the time of the crash.

Spain has declared three days of national mourning over the crash, one of its worst-ever rail disasters.

The police chief in the Galicia region, Jaime Iglesias, said on Friday that driver Francisco Jose Garzon Amo would be questioned "as a suspect for a crime linked to the cause of the accident".

He added that Mr Garzon could not yet testify because of his medical condition.

Now that's quite interesting :) Also, my respects go out to the families of this incident and to those who's lost family members because of this incident.
