Faking a cough sounds so boring compared to these sick day excuses. CareerBuilder released its 2014 roundup of the year's most unbelievable excuses bosses have heard from employees. If they're to be believed, American workers got into some serious hijinks this year.

Here are the top excuses from their representative sample of 2,203 hiring managers and HR professionals across companies:

10. Employee just put a casserole in the oven.
9. Employee’s plastic surgery for enhancement purposes needed some "tweaking" to get it just right.
8. Employee was sitting in the bathroom and her feet and legs fell asleep. When she stood up, she fell and broke her ankle.
7. Employee had been at the casino all weekend and still had money left to play with on Monday morning.
6. Employee woke up in a good mood and didn't want to ruin it.
5. Employee had a “lucky night” and didn’t know where he was.
4. Employee got stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and couldn't get out.
3. Employee had a gall stone they wanted to heal holistically.
2. Employee caught their uniform on fire by putting it in the microwave to dry.
1. Employee accidentally got on a plane.

While these could give you a stitch in your side from laughing, faking a sick day is no joke. One in four employers have caught an employee faking a sick day by checking his or her Twitter or other social media feeds. And one in five have fired a worker caught in a lie.

Thoughts?

Have you got any unbelievable reasons for calling in sick?

No. Because where I'm from by law they can't ask and you are under no obligation to say.

All they can do is request a certificate to say you've seen a doctor (mainly to verify you've been sick) but even that's under certain circumstances (If it's a Monday, or a Friday, or your third day away.)

No. I just call in and say "I'm not feeling well enough to come in." I don't need to give a specific reason as to why I'm not feeling well. If I'm out for three days, then I need a doctors note clearing me to go back to work.

I said our boat had lost power to the motor so i wasn't able to get there. Lol i was actually on our beach havibg drinks with family and friends and our boat was tied to the dock. Lol

One time my son was faking sick to get out of school and I knew if he were sick my boss would let me stay home. So I played along with his lie and we stayed home. Later at night I told him that I knew he was faking the whole time and I had been wanting to stay home that day. The look on his face was priceless lmao

Playing the long game with that one! #Winning

Sure did. He thought he had me convinced the whole day. I never got on to him for it which is why I don't understand why he hasn't tried it again. 😟

So I’ve heard of this story where an employee, friends with a work colleague on facebook, posted photos of their vacation, having told their employer they’re sick. The work colleague reported them.

If you’re gonna call into work sick, ensure privacy settings on social media or beware what you post, ppl! 😂

As for @Randy , I wonder how many of these excuses materialised… part of me believes this is a headline grabbing fictional article 🤪

If I fake it, I stay home and it's a lazy day. I don't risk going out until after hours, because with my luck I'll run into one of my bosses and that won't be fun.

Smart move! 😂

I feel loyal to my employer as they’re accepting and understanding of my invisible disability(and regardless of anti-discrimination laws, that is rare), so I wouldn’t even consider calling in sick like that. I’d just take annual leave if I wanted to have time off
