Wasn't expecting Richie Ryan to get his hacked off by Duncan Macleod in the 5th season of Highlander. That took me by surprise because I thought maybe Richie was either going to leave towards the end of the series and not be seen again or get killed off by another immortal. I was a little upset about that because he was a great character. Sucked to see him go.

What is the most sudden/unexpected character death in a film or TV show?

The Wire's Omar Little...period, full stop. Quoting something I wrote over in my "Ask Me" thread:

For me, one of the best TV series of all-time was HBO's The Wire and my favorite character was that of Omar Little (portrayed by Michael K. Williams), who was a street-wise Baltimorean who made a living robbing drug dealers along with his crew of bandits. What made the character so enthralling for me was a couple of reasons (1)unlike most of those who were involved in the Charm City's drug trade, Little made it a point not to harm those who weren't involved in that business and for his street-wise demeanor, there was a very smart and, in some ways, gentle side to him that he kept very private, (2)Omar Little is probably one of the most prominent LGBT characters to grace the small screen in recent memory; regardless of your views in that regard, you couldn't help but watch and respect the character of Omar Little as a character, period and (3)his character was one of the few characters in The Wire who could engender both fear & respect from both sides, the cops & the drug trade.

Anyway, now that I've said that, the scene that comes to mind in regards to the question above is a Season 5 episode, "Clarifications", where Omar's standing in a convenience store, just minding his business, when this little kid walks in..now, Omar doesn't pay attention and moments later, the kid pulls out a piece and shoots Omar right in the head, and its' the shock and horror at seeing Omar go down like that that makes me cry, because his death's not having lived a long life or being able to survive the game that was Baltimore in the series. No, his death was simply because some kid wanted to put a notch on his belt and what better notch to put there than to be the one who killed Omar Little and its' that which tears me up whenever I watch it.
