Michael Schumacher is being brought out of his coma and is "responding to instructions", according to Sky News sources.

The seven-time Formula One champion has been in a Grenoble hospital with severe injuries since the accident on December 29.

His manager, Sabine Kehm, said in a statement that the 45-year-old was slowly being woken from his induced coma and Sky News understands he has been "responding to simple instructions".

"Michael's sedation is being reduced in order to allow the start of the waking-up process, which may take a long time," Ms Kehm said.

Finally, some good news. Hope he continues to improve and makes a full recovery.

Michael Schumacher's former Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa has secretly visited the stricken F1 legend as he battles to survive.

Brazilian Massa said he got some response from the seven-times world champion as he is eased out of a coma following the Alpine skiing accident which nearly cost him his life.

Massa said: "He was sleeping, and I was very positive because he was normal.

“He looks normal, and he also gave some reactions with the mouth and everything. So it’s positive to look at him.

“I have no experience to say anything. I’m not a doctor. But when I saw him, for me, it looked very positive."

Was very glad to hear of this but as stated it's only a small step in a very long journey. I wish him all the best and i'm hoping for a complete recovery over time.

Multiple outlets are reporting the same thing:

February 28, 2014

The 45-year-old Schumacher fell while skiing in France and hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet. Doctors operated to remove blood clots from his brain but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.

Schumacher's condition stabilized after he was placed in the coma. Late last month, doctors began the process of withdrawing sedatives to try to wake him up.

His agent, Sabine Kehm, said in an email on Friday that "Michael is still in the wake-up phase" and that "this phase can be long." Schumacher's family has released few details of his condition to protect his privacy.

"It does not bode well," said Dr. Tipu Aziz, professor of neurosurgery at Oxford University who is not connected to Schumacher's care. "The fact that he hasn't woken up implies that the injury has been extremely severe and that a full recovery is improbable."

Schumacher condition shows 'encouraging signs'

Injured Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has been showing "small, encouraging signs" in his fight for recovery, his family says.

"We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up," the relatives said in a statement.

Hope he would get a complete recovery...

I don't think he will. I think he will come round but the longer he is in a coma the less likely he will make a complete recovery.

Interesting link http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/formula1/25938347 That was written on 29 Jan though and it is now 16 March.

4 April 2014

F1 champion Michael Schumacher is showing "moments of consciousness" after months in a coma, his agent has said.

Sabine Kehm said in a statement to the media that he was "making progress", adding that they remain "confident".

More:

Kehm, however, is unwilling to go into specifics with regard to Schumacher's situation and his care, adding: "We would like to thank you all for the continuous sympathies.

"At the same time we again ask for your understanding that we do not intend to disclose details.

"This is necessary to protect the privacy of Michael and his family, and to enable the medical team to work in full calmness."

If they do not intend to disclose details, I wonder why Kehm even feels it necessary to update the media. When the update is that he's showing "moments of consciousness", that only brings on more questions. If Kehm truly wanted to protect Michael and his family, he wouldn't be speaking with the media. The time to update and make a statement is when Michael, himself, speaks to the media. Hopefully that day will come.

And then this is released.

And, it appears, so was he.

16 June

F1 champion Michael Schumacher has left hospital in Grenoble and is no longer in a coma, his family says.

The 45-year-old has been transferred to Lausanne university hospital in Switzerland, officials there say.

Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering a severe head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on 29 December.

And this from another source:
Formula One great Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left a French hospital where he had been receiving treatment since a skiing accident in December, his manager said Monday.

Schumacher left the hospital in Grenoble "to continue his long phase of rehabilitation," manager Sabine Kehm said in a statement.

She did not say when he was released, where the seven-time F1 champion was taken or give any further details of his condition, and her office refused to elaborate on the statement.

Schumacher's family "would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months," Kehm's statement said.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye," it added.

Makes me wonder just how severe the brain damage is from his accident. :|
