Four people have been shot dead in two shootings in two villages in upstate New York, US police say.
Schools in the region are on lockdown as the police hunt for a suspect, local media report.
Two other people were wounded in the shootings which took place in the villages of Herkimer and Mohawk.
Firefighters also worked for an hour and a half to put out a fire in an apartment block near the shooting in Mohawk, the Utica OD newspaper reports.
The villages are described as twin communities on either side of the Mohawk River, about 65 miles (105km) east of the city of Syracuse.
'Very scary'
New York state police said two people had been fatally shot in Herkimer at a car wash and two others had been shot dead at a barber shop in Mohawk on Wednesday morning.
It was not specified at which location the injured people were shot.
According to Utica OD, the suspect was seen carrying a long gun.
The paper also reports that police were seen taking about half a dozen firearms from the apartment block where there was a fire, but officers would not confirm they belonged to the suspect.
Nearby schools and Herkimer County Community College have been placed on lockdown, the regional TV station WKTV reports.
Everybody's on lockdown, all the schools, the college, the village. It's very, very scary, Amanda Viscomi, a Herkimer village official, told AP news agency.

Hope they catch this person real fast. I'd be scared to death too if I had no idea where this suspect might be lurking.
