A wave of car bombs has killed at least 51 people in mostly Shia areas of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and in other cities around the country.

More than 200 people were wounded in the attacks, officials said.

More than 2,500 Iraqis have died in attacks since April, the UN says - with violence at its highest since 2008.

Libya would be a good number two:

Two explosions have hit the restive Libyan city of Benghazi - both outside buildings used by the judiciary.

A security spokesman told the BBC that 10 people had been injured but there were no deaths.

The blasts are the latest in a series of violent incidents in Benghazi.

On Saturday about 1,200 prisoners escaped from a city jail, and protesters attacked offices linked to the Muslim Brotherhood following the assassination of a political activist.

North Korea

(Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is planning to visit North Korea soon to try to win the release of a U.S. citizen held for committing crimes against the reclusive state, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported on Monday.

Carter has made contact with the North to arrange for the visit, and he is likely to make the trip in a personal capacity to secure the release of Kenneth Bae, the U.S. citizen, a source in Washington was quoted as saying by Yonhap.

An employee of the Soul of Haiti Foundation – a charity backed by several well known Irish businessmen and sporting figures – was killed in the last two weeks in an incident in the troubled Caribbean country's capital of Port-au-Prince.

Daniel Luma Fleurantin, a long-term driver and local security adviser to the charity, was shot while mediating in a dispute.

In a statement, the philanthropic organisation – which was founded in 2007 by finalists of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Programme – said: "The Soul of Haiti Foundation is saddened to confirm that a Haitian employee of the foundation, Daniel Luma Fleurantin, was killed in an incident in Port-au-Prince on Saturday night.

The Taliban have held secret talks with the government of Afghan president Hamid Karzai in a bid to jumpstart a stumbling peace process (AP), although discussions with representatives of the Afghan High Peace Council have so far been unofficial and viewed as a negotiation on conditions for formal talks. The Taliban's reclusive leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar, said Tuesday that his group was willing to start peace negotiations, blaming the United States and the Afghan government for the derailment of talks two months ago and calling a boycott on next year's presidential elections. As Western troops continue their 2014 drawdown, controversy has mired the peace process since the official opening of a Taliban political office (Reuters) in June in Qatar.

QUETTA: A suicide bomber killed 38 people on Thursday and wounded more than 50 others, most of them Pakistani policemen attending a funeral on the eve of the Eid al-Fitr festival, an officer said.

The attack at police headquarters in the southwestern city of Quetta was the latest in a series of attacks highlighting the major security challenges faced by a newly elected government.

The bomber struck as officers gathered to pay their respects to a colleague who had been shot dead only hours before in Quetta, capital of the troubled province of Baluchistan.

I take exception with that.

ELECTION chiefs in Zimbabwe have admitted for the first time that last week's presidential polls were tainted with massive irregularities affecting the votes of more than half a million people.

The nine-member Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said that 512,000 people were either turned away or had been "assisted" by officials to cast their vote because they were rendered incapable. A total of 3.4 million people voted in the disputed election.

Robert Mugabe, President-elect, was awarded 61 per cent of the presidential ballot and his Zanu-PF party took 75 per cent of parliamentary seats, according to official results.

At least six suspected militants have been killed in a US drone strike on a compound in north-west Pakistan, Pakistani officials say.

Drones fired two missiles at the house in the village of Darga Mandi in North Waziristan close to the Afghan border, according to officials.

The area is believed to be a stronghold for the Haqqani militant network.

Pakistan's foreign ministry has condemned the strike as a violation of its sovereignty.
