Some people might say

Yes it should It actually takes time and skills for people to adjust in video games just like actual sports and also take fast hand movement and eye coordination and many people fail to realize this cause they think it's a simple matter of mashing buttons but a gamer must know what he or she is doing just like people who play the physical sports

while others might say

Video gaming is not a sport It's akin to watching movies for relaxation, not revitalization. If you play them too much they'll dull your mind. Sports involve mental and physical exertion.

So what do you think? Should video gaming be considered a sport?

:gamer:

Video-Games aren't a sport, plain and simple, that isn't an insult but what I believe to be simply a fact to be stated. Personally, I believe video-games are above sports, however, that's merely a personal preference. Video-Games do require skills, fast hand movement, and eye coordination, however, there's a lot of things that require that. Those aren't the requirements to be a sport. Video-Games are more inline with books and movies as an artistic visualization of somebody's imagination. There's also the discussion of whether or not games are considered art. Which I believe is obviously yes, and the only wiggle room on that for me is that they are either art or above art because they have all the elements of a movie with an interactivity that allows you to experience an adventure.

Chess is considered a sport.

Why not videogames? Many of them feature the same components as sports; coordination, teamwork, quick thinking, strategy, practice, quick reactions.

If chess and darts are a sport, then so are videogames.

IMO none of those are sports though. Real sports make you burn calories and are good for your health.

Chess shouldn't be considered a sport. It should be considered as nothing more than a board-game. There.

I agree. Video games shouldn't be either. They are activities that pass the time, but they are not sports in my opinion.

Video games should be considered a recreation sport, just like horseshoes, bocce ball, and ladderball.

Example: Mario Kart Wii, with four different players (either teams of two players, or four individuals), is like motorsports, and should be treated like local racing on local race tracks, where you have qualifying, heats, and mains.

This.
A video game can be as much of a sport, if not more so than, chess.

Honestly, neither chess or video games would be the first thing on my mind when thinking about sports. Call it whatever you like, but my first thought will still be related to physical exercise.
If you play them too much they'll dull your mind.
Uhuh... suuuuure.

I don't consider chess, darts, billiards, Texas hold 'em or video gaming a sport, they are games...

What do you consider a sport then? What makes a sport a sport?

It's all a matter of opinion what a sport actually is and to say a game becomes a sport... Not sure if there's any clear definitions or explanations to what makes a game turn into a sport... :|

Don't think you humans figured that out yet... :P

Would you say that if you have to sit down to do it, or can relax while doing it, its not a sport?

People think golf is a sport and others say it's not, that it's just a game... ;)

So... what is your definition of a sport? Does it require a team? If so, explain tennis, badminton, etc.

+prince said:
Well, if you want to generalize it, games can be a sport, but it's still a game and a game first...

Other than something like Bass Fishing or Surfing, or perhaps Auto Racing... name a Professional Sport that is NOT a "game".

My stepson just finished third in a college level Fencing tournament, I believe in Epee. I don't think that is a 'game', but I've also never heard of a professional tour either.

A game of tennis.

A game of football.

A game of badminton.

A game of baseball.

A game of cricket.

etc

Definition of a game: a form of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.

Definition of a sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Looking at the definitions, video gaming qualifies as a sport.
