I managed several VPN connections over Verizon provided circuits when I was working for the State.
In most cases, once they were up and stable on both ends, they worked well.
The problems arose when the techies upstairs did an update to Some Thing Some Where, with the proxy, or firewall, or router, or whatever, and didn't tell anybody, and took the link down.
Then it was usually two days of everybody pointing fingers and saying "I didn't do it" before it would be stable again.
