Have you ever received a warning on a forum for breaking the rules?
Did you think the staff member handled the situation appropriately?

Do you think staff members should send a courtesy PM reminding you of the rules before they start issuing official warning through the forum software?

Are warning systems on forums really necessary or is it better to attempt to talk out problems through PM's?

Yes.

I was warned on one forum for being a spammer.

They said you could put a URL in your signature. And I did. You can guess which one.

They said that was link spamming.

I immediately told them to go to hell.

I get more traffic to my websites by accident in a month than they did total in a month.

Which is ANOTHER reason I stay with Off Topix. When I link to something I did ten years ago I never get accused of being an Arswh---- 'Congressman'.

(there is another definition to that 'C' word, which may be found in the Glossary, which is linked in another thread)

I got warned for trolling a couple of times on one forum. Strictly speaking they were in their right, but really they were just little jokes so imo they were overreacting. In any case I left and found a more laid back forum that appreciated a joke from time to time.

Yes i have.. For spamming xD

I had a warning about a week ago on another forum, because I insulted someone's spelling. I don't regret it.

Hhaha what did they write?

On one forum, I somehow got locked out of my account. I emailed the administrator and he told me to go ahead and make another account until it could get sorted out. One of the moderators, said I was using multiple accounts which was against the rules. She went ahead and banned me before I could even explain why I made a second account. I then had to contact the administrator again to let him know what happened. For crap sake, you would have thought the administrator would have let the staff know what was going on. It took 4 days to straighten out the whole mess. Then it was found out, not sure how, that one of the moderators had four different accounts and would post as four different people. How fair is that?

On another forum, I was accused by two moderators of trolling. THEY were the ones trolling, not me. I didn't even get a warning. I got a 5 day "cooling off" ban. They were notorious for trolling members yet you had no one to report them to. The administrator was never there so they just had a free-for-all with members they disliked. Needless to say, I left that crap hole. I was happy to find out that that forum finally closed down.

Well I got warned once but I didn't break the rules.
I registered on my boyfriend's forum and everything it was okay until a member registered named GGE. After that my bf promoted him as a moderator. Then I wrote something on the forum I don't remember what but GGE warned me and he sent me a PM. After that I wrote back and I said this to my bf of course. I think my bf kicked him from the forum. I don't know why he warned me because I didn't do anything wrong.

Sounds like they were setting you up from the beginning. An administrator can reset your password and email it to you in just a few seconds.

It's people like that who made warnings out to be a joke and honestly they are.

You can take two people on a forum and once you took away the titles, the user groups, and all the other crap is when you realize you are both equals and it's all the foruming stuff that blinds you to it.

Once you go into this with the thought that both you and the other are equals is when you can honestly sit down and talk out issues and resolve them to everyone's satisfaction. It can mean solving the problem for good and keeping everything as it was beforehand with the exception being you now have someone who respects you more then before because you showed you deserve that respect.

The only thing warn tools do is make you think you are superior which just means the problem is never resolved and you lose members and respect from people. It's honestly not worth it. The only time I would even bother with warns is when you have someone causing trouble and completely unwilling to discuss the matter. You find most people are willing to talk it out if you are. That's what I think anyway.

On Off Topix, I have no warnings, but I have a huge history of warnings and bans:

Five years ago, I got a short ban for excessively cursing about a user online. A few months later, I got banned not once, but twice (the second time was permanent) for trolling the staff members.

On a different forum four years ago, I was banned for trolling again. Never again did I get banned until July of last year, when I received a silly permanent ban for excessively spamming when I didn't. During the indefinite suspension, I joined Off Topix.

On a Super Mario World website, I got short bans for backseat moderating, trolling, off-topic spam, and ranting about a television show I disliked.

I haven't noticed that behavior from you here. Was there unfriendly people at those other forums?
