The Football Association will not to take action against Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney following his clash with Wigan defender James McCarthy on Saturday.

Rooney appeared to aim an elbow at the Wigan defender in an off-the-ball incident during Manchester United's 4-0 win at the DW Stadium.

At the time referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a free-kick and, after contacting the official today, the FA have been told the official feels he administered the appropriate action, which leaves the governing body powerless to launch disciplinary proceedings against the 25 year-old.

Rooney risked a three-match suspension for violent conduct had disciplinary measures been instigated, which would have seen him miss tomorrow's Premier League contest with Chelsea.

Today's verdict, however, means United can call on their star striker for their clash at Stamford Bridge where they will look to move seven points clear of Arsenal with victory over the champions.

Speaking on Saturday, Sir Alex Ferguson defended his signing and claimed Rooney was the victim of a media witch-hunt.

I am a united fan and that is a blatent elbow, should have been a red card and 3 match ban.

The more players aren't punished for this kind of behaviour the more they will keep doing it.

Rooney should be ashamed of himself. And to be honest, he wouldn't have been missed if he had received the ban, we have enough strike force to win.
