They say silence is golden – but there’s a room in the U.S that’s so quiet it becomes unbearable after a short time.

The longest that anyone has survived in the ‘anechoic chamber’ at Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis is just 45 minutes.

It’s 99.99 per cent sound absorbent and holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s quietest place, but stay there too long and you may start hallucinating.

How long do you think you could last in there?

Would a deaf person start hallucinating too? [font=tahoma, geneva, sans-serif]

We may need to experiment... That sounded mean XD

I would say yes as even the profoundly deaf can detect vibrations in the air or another surface through their skin.

Rooms like this absorb all vibrations, even something like the subsonic tapping on the arm of your chair in boredom.

That seems a bit creepy.

Would be interesting to try, though. Maybe bring a book...

Would be interesting to try. Perhaps bring an iPod and listen to music.

Well then I would just go to sleep!

While I like silence. After a short time, I have to have some sound going on. Its why I tend to always have some music playing.
