The National Crime Agency is warning that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are facing a unique challenge online.
It is launching a new service for those exploring their sexuality and gender.
Jonathan Baggaley of the Child Exploitations and Online Protection Agency said specific advice is needed.
"We know that young people who are exploring sexuality or gender will take advantage of the anonymity of the internet," he said.
"[They] try to get advice and support. Unfortunately some adults will take advantage of that to use that secret to get power over them."

Earlier this week, 18-year-old Aaron from Liverpool spoke out as part of a Newsbeat investigation into "hook-up" apps.
"I was struggling with my sexuality," he explained.
"So having something on my phone I could easily download is one way of meeting new people who are gay that I can relate to."
He added: "The first time I had sex I met up with this guy, he knew I was emotionally vulnerable. I was 13, he was 24.
"We used to go out for meals, go to cinema, play the Xbox and stuff like that, so looking back now it's kind of like the signs of grooming I'd say."
Mr Baggaley says that he hopes the updated NCA website will help people like Aaron in the future.
