Should unemployed people be made to work for their welfare money?

Debate Statement

Nothing is free, whatever they are receiving was taken from someone else. I think it would be great if welfare recipients had to work to receive their check. There are always community service projects that need doing, they should have to work a certain number of hours picking up litter or helping out in a soup kitchen of something of that nature instead of just getting a free ride. It would build their self esteem, since they would actually be giving back instead of just completely depending on the system. I know there are some who have disabilities, but I'm sure there is a job they could do, even if it's just filing or something low key. I think this would also force some of the lazier recipients to just get a job since there would be no free ride anymore.

Isn't there already welfare to work programs and time limits (here a person can only be on welfare for 5 years max, I think)?  The goal is to get them permanent jobs so that they can get off welfare, for good.  

There's plenty of criminals (in alternative work programs) to pick up litter and do other community service type things.

But yeah, disabled people should be on disability (not welfare).

Again though if we just cut them off that motivation will kick in when they begin to starve.

there's so many unemployed and/or homeless people in america that are willing and are desperate to find and get a job... you think that everyone that's on welfare are just people that are lazy and don't want to work? i think you're lost in fairy-tale land...

so many businesses are too picky these days as well, that's another issue people are facing when there's so many people unemployed and the economy is so trashed...

And there are jobs out there but if you can collect welfare instead of flipping burgers or working on a farm people are going to take the handout most of the time.
