A major rescue operation is underway after a colliery tunnel at a coal mine collapsed and trapped seven miners 300ft underground.

While three men have been hoisted to the surface, four workers remain below the rubble and the emergency services are working frantically to reach them.

Oh no...another mine collapse! I hope they can reach and rescue the four remaining men!

UPDATE:

One of the four miners trapped 300ft underground was found dead today, as divers sent in to rescue the men were forced to abandon their attempt.

Rescuers were obstructed by debris and high water levels, and are now trying to pump in oxygen and pump out water in a bid to keep the other three men alive.

WHOLE ARTICLE:

One of the four miners trapped 300ft underground was found dead today, as divers sent in to rescue the men were forced to abandon their attempt.

Rescuers were obstructed by debris and high water levels, and are now trying to pump in oxygen and pump out water in a bid to keep the other three men alive.

Attempts to make contact with the miners have so far been unsuccessful, and a specialist listening device has been deployed which can detect movement underground.

The men, named last night as Phillip Hill, 45, Charles Breslin, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39, were trapped when torrents of water rushed into a mineshaft yesterday morning and blocked them from the exit.

This morning emergency services were unable to recover or identify the body they discovered.

However, a BBC journalist claims that the body has now been retrieved from the mine.

Radio 5 Live's Mark Hutchings wrote on Twitter: 'Body has been recovered. Relatives being informed. Search continues for other three miners.'

A spokesman for the fire service said that the dead man had been found on the 'exit side of the body of water', but added that the other three are still believed to be located 'on the other side of the blockage', where there may still be air pockets.

Superintendent Phil Davies said: 'The men's families have been informed of the death of one of the miners and obviously our sympathy is with them all in what is a very difficult time.'

Local MP Peter Hain said rescue workers were toiling away and had recently discovered there was no methane in the mine.

He said: 'The families have been told there is oxygen in the vicinity of the mine.

'We hope that those trapped have been able to find and air pocket and were able to scramble to safety.'

He also praised the work of police and rescue workers, and expressed sympathy with the families of the miners, who he said were experiencing a 'small hell'.

'We hope that those trapped have been able to find and air pocket and were able to scramble to safety.'

I hope so too!

It was confirmed not to long a ago that a third miner has been found dead.

I have a feeling that the fourth and remaining man may be found dead too, but I'll stay hopeful till I hear otherwise..

I just heard that too Boogie. They are not holding much hope for the remaining man. This is just so very sad and tragic.

Unfortunately, all four miners, who were trapped in the Welsh mine have been found dead.

My heart goes out to their loved ones. What a sad and tragic thing to have happened. May they all RIP.
