A megapixel is one million pixels, the more pixels in a picture the more detailed it should be. So theoretically the more megapixels in a camera, the better it should be. It is well known that most new photographers always set out to look for the highest number of megapixels for their money.

Do you know what megapixels are?

Have you ever thought about them?

How many megapixels are in your camera? Cell phone camera?

My iphone has a whopping 48 megapixels. I hear it has a better camera that what some people use to make movies and TV shows.

I can tell you that’s not even remotely true.

Your sensor that holds 48 megapixels is say just for understanding sensor sizes is the size of a car tire.

Then you have real cameras that are the size of a compact car, medium sized car, full size truck and then a dumpster truck.

You stick 48 megapixels in these large sensors there is more room for light collecting and that means better performance for low light.

Cell phones use a ton of computational trickery to overcome some of these issues but with the sensor size limitations and the glass they will never come close to a real camera and it becomes extremely obvious when you print your photos.
