Hmm, "anything using the scientific method" sounds about right to me.
That's to say, draw up a hypothesis, try to disprove it, adjust your hypothesis, repeat till you (and other people, peer reviewing is important) can no longer disprove it, call it a theory and accept it as 'fact'.
