What makes something a work of art?

Is art defined by particular boundaries?

If so, what are they and how have they changed over the course of history?

I think it's the un-quantifiable things, honestly. It has to be unique, it has to speak to you, it has to have meaning, and it has to be genuinely impressive in some respect. But more than that, there's a certain "x factor" to art that you can't put your finger on.

Google says: The definition of work of art is something that is considered to have aesthetic value, something that is beautiful, intriguing, interesting, creative or extremely well done.

Something 'significant'. Though that can be misconstrued. Paraguay lost 85% of their male population in a war with Brazil/Argentina - Basically more than half the country got wiped out. That's significant and therefore... a work of art, in a way?

Ban me now.

nah, think of all the families that lost their husband, father and provider. Sad stuff. :(

When everyone likes it, it's a work of art. When everyone hates it, it's trash.
