I think we can all agree that we love forums and enjoy talking to different people around the world. There are so many forums available out there covering various topics. What are some of the reasons that make you join a forum?

As for myself: I like to join forums that are established and have quality posts and are active. I also tend to join forums starting out when they show great potential and if I feel like I can contribute to it.

When there's a brand new forum, especially ran by people I know, I contribute with original stuff. And I second what Sharon said.

Honestly, if it seems like the admins/founder of the forum is really dedicated and is going to be loyal to the community, I will join. After all, every great forum starts somewhere am I right? :P

I know forums have to start somewhere but I have joined far too many brand new forums, put in the effort of contributing to the community, only to be hit with an offline message next time I visit. These days I am more inclined to join a somewhat established community with at least a hand full of members logging in daily.

Firstly I look at the activity. If it's lil to none, then I move on.
Then I look at the topics, if they have decent ones that I can see myself posting in, then I'm in.
I like to also look at member's posts, try to get to know people before joining to see if I would like posting with them.

That's about it really.

The member base hands down. Of course there's the visual appeal and activity level, but I personally believe at the end of the day I want to be somewhere where I feel I can simply be me. I do not want to have to worry about what others may think of me if I say this or that. Here at Off Topix I can be me. I have always been me and I always will be. So yes, members make or break a community, in my opinion. Go Off Topix! :)

There have been many forums I have joined and one day stumbled upon that particular forum, and relized that I don't even remember the log in info
What makes me join a forum is if I see that the forum is active, has great topics/ discussions, has features on the forum that I like, and has fun contests.

Same here. Also I should note that the topics on a forum should be original creations and not copypastas from everywhere else. What's the point having the same topic on two forums anyway?
