What the heck? Why me?

I guess you should never let some people in on your financial status--



I'm a really nice person, but for some reason, people think they can take advantage of me. If you know me really well, you know that I like to donate where I can to keep things going. Recently, I donated to a favorite community of mine to help reach the monthly goal. However, a few days later, I get an e-mail from an administrator asking for 10 dollars to renew the domain. What the heck? I just gave ten dollars - what are you using the donations for - diapers and wipes?!



I just needed to let this out publicly. What legit administrator uses donations for things other than for the community?!

I used the donations from the other forum to buy the Off Topix.net domain, I couldnt afford to renew FA's hosting but I could afford that much.



Dontations should be put into the forum.



However when you donate money to someone, it becomes their money. So there is a chance that they could use it for other things.

Well I wasn't donating to the owner, but to the forum - and when you promise that the money will be used for the forum's life, people will suspect that is what the money will be used for, and that only.

That is true.. But the other can happen as well.

Some people also donate money to forums to feel a sense of control. As in I DONATED MONEY TO THIS FORUM SO I AM ENTITLED TO ....... or I DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT YOU DID WITH THE MONEY and that sometimes make people remove the donate button as they dont want to deal with that headache. Not talking about you, but Ive seen it happen with other people on forums.

See, when I donate, I don't donate for the reasons you mentioned... Although,I donate to feel the sense of I'm a good member, adore me, or Applaud me, I've helped to make X, Y, and Z happen.



Generally, I'm not mad that he did other things with the money, I just hope he used the money in an emergence.

People shouldn't even ASK for a donation. But if you donated then you're not expecting anything back, so he could have used the money for anything he wanted, as Nebulous said. But before you donate, it's still your money so you can say no.

Just learn from this time and look at the admin of that forum different from now.

You should never let anyone who doesn't need to know, your financial status. My financial status in known by me--my husband--and our banker. That's it. If we choose to give to charity--or let a friend of our have a loan. Then we do. We feel no compelling need to explain ourselves to someone who would like a donation or loan.

If The American Cancer Society (just an example) comes knocking on the door for donations--we might give or we might not--but we don't explain the rational behind our gift (or lack thereof) Just a little bit of advice.

No, this is not Forum Advertiser or The Island. This is Off Topix, using Forum Advertiser's and The Island's hosting, I think.

This hosting was from The Island. But as you say, it isn't FA or The Island. If anything it is a morphed form of the two. A laid-back general chat forum, with a bit of advertising thrown in.

Princess I didn't give my financial status out, perse, but I was saying I had a little extra cash and that'd I'd give something. I guess that meant after giving the change I did, they assumed I had more, because I had given a large donation a time before. 45 dollars to be exact.
