Where can promoting a website or blog lessen/end?

I understand that with websites and blogs you may never stop promoting or maybe it can. I'd like to know for those that have the heavy traffic, where can you stop promoting your site/blog heavily and start reducing the amount of promoting that you do to the point here you just let the site/blog promote itself?

I think to some extent, you'll always have to do at least a little promotion to help it.
