You see some $97 shoes, but don't have any money, so you borrow $50 from your mom & $50 from your dad = $100. You buy the shoes and have $3 change, so give your mom $1, give your dad $1 & keep $1 for yourself. You now owe your mom $49 & your dad $49. So.. $49 + $49 = $98 & your $1 = $99. So where is the missing $1?

There is no missing dollar. 97 dollars went to the cashier, 1 dollar is with your mom, 1 dollar went to your dad, and the last dollar is in your pocket. the math regarding the money returned to the parents being deducted from what was owed is irrelevant.

97 = cashier

1 = mom

1 = dad

1 = you

100 = total

You have £100, right? And you spent £97. With £3 change.

£97 + £3 = £100

You give £2 back, leaving £98 pounds that you still owe them. Where this money is does not matter: it is still inclusive in the money borrowed, and so is the £2 you gave back, as it was part of the original amount borrowed. Therefore;

£2 + £97 + £1 = £100
