Scots are the friendliest people in the UK, Londoners are the least welcoming and the Welsh are really shy.

That’s according to a personality study of more than 400,000 Britons.

Despite being unwelcoming, Londoners were likely to be extroverts whereas the Scottish were more reserved.

They also had the most agreeable people, with this combination probably showing why they were seen as the friendliest.

Dr Jason Rentfrow, from Cambridge University’s department of psychology, said the findings were more than a bit of fun and could help shape Government decisions.

‘Geographical differences are associated with a range of economic, social and health outcomes – and hence how important resources are allocated,’ he said.

Metropolitan areas like London, Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow showed greater openness – a trait made up of creativity, curiosity, imagination and intellect.

The study is based on data that was gathered as part of the Big Personality Test, an online survey published by the BBC in 2009 as part of a collaboration between the BBC and the scientific community.

Wouldn't really say anyone is the most or least welcoming. Everywhere in England has the people you don't want to and the people who are super friendly.
