The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have emerged from hospital with their new baby son.

Walking out of St Mary's Hospital in west London with their son to cheers from well wishers, the Duchess said it was "a special time for any parent".

Prince William said they were "still working on a name".

The couple went back inside the private Lindo Wing and placed the child in a car seat. The duke drove his family away towards to Kensington Palace.

Speaking to reporters, the couple both said the experience was "very emotional".

~Update~

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have named their baby son George Alexander Louis, Kensington Palace has said.

Prince George, the third-in-line to the throne, will be known as King George VII when he one day becomes king.

Kensington Palace said in a short statement: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis.

"The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge."

The couple announced their decision to the world two days after he was born.

Six King Georges have worn the crown throughout history since the German-born George I, the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, acceded to the throne in 1714.

The last was the Queen's father George VI who died in 1952 but was known to his family as Bertie.

George was the most popular name with the bookies with betting firms William Hill, Coral and Paddy Power all offering short odds on the moniker.

Sky's Royal commentator Alastair Bruce said: "The Queen must be delighted because this is the name of her father.

"It's a stabilising name but also echoes the name of King George V, the founder of the House of Windsor which of course the new prince is the latest member of.

"It has many echoes through royal history."

The name Louis is likely to be a tribute to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Duke of Edinburgh's uncle and the last British Viceroy of India before independence in 1947.

Mountbatten and William's father the Prince of Wales were very close, with Charles confiding in his relative.

He was a big baby! Glad he finally has a name.

Excuse me, my supply of "give a royal damn" is gone, I'm going to order some straightaway.

But, it appears I am in the minority.

Well, that's nice and all but this whole thing has gone way out of proportion, as what Evil Eye said. The news would never shut up about it, even here. Oh, and it's even worse in America... I mean, why should they care about our royalty? They've broke off from the British Empire centuries ago and you think anything regarding the royal family wouldn't concern them.

To think the hoo-ha over the royal wedding two years was bad enough... I wouldn't be surprised if the media won't shut up about their baby taking its first steps, or if Prince William does a nappy change.

The American media love the Royal family more than what we do  Mostly I think it's about having an excuse for a party or whatnot.

I can see that... how come the American media are so obsessed with them though? That's one thing I'll never know.

Yeah... but the royal family shouldn't concern the Americans. They don't give two shits about it.

Maybe it's because it's about the Queen and Princesses and Princes, it's sorta like a fairytale? I'm not entirely sure.

Just from out here in the 'cheap seats'.

It isn't "the Americans" that are all enthralled with the Royals. There are a few Real People who are Anglophiles or whatever, but they are a minority.

It is the "American Media" that is absolutely mesmerized by the British (or any other) Aristocracy, by Celebrities, and, perversely, some Banana Republic Dictator with a big mustache and a fancy hat.

I couldn't care less. I think the monarchy is an outdated system and we have no need to keep them in their castles and shit just because of the family they were born into.
