Seven players have been forced to pull out of Wimbledon on Wednesday in the most injury-hit second round in the competition's history.

Women's second seed Victoria Azarenka and men's sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga were among those who withdrew.

Organisers rejected Azarenka's claims that the courts were of poor quality, describing them as "high quality".

But Maria Sharapova, who lost to Michelle Larcher De Brito on court two, referred to the surface as "dangerous".

The 2004 champion fell three times and required lengthy treatment on her hip in the second set as she went out 6-3 6-4.

Defending champion Roger Federer lost to world number 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky to complete a crazy day at Wimbledon.

The seven-time winner at SW19 lost 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 7-6 (7/5) to Stakhovsky in the second round.

On a day of big-name exits at SW 19, Federer's departure was the most surprising of all as he went down to a player ranked 116 in the world.

It's really surprising that both nadal and federer are out. Hopefully both murrey and djokavitch (no clue on how to spell his name) don't lose any matches before the final.

I don't watch tennis, or golf, on TV. But.... It has been entertaining just checking the scores once in awhile.

Wimbledon champ Bartoli retires

MASON, Ohio (AP) -- With her body aching after another loss, Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli decided to retire Wednesday night, saying she could no longer deal with the continuous pain on the court.

Her tearful announcement at the Western & Southern Open came less than two months after she pushed through the pain to win her greatest championship on Wimbledon's chewed-up grass.

''My body was really starting to fall apart and I was able to keep it together, go through the pain - with a lot of pain - throughout this Wimbledon and make it happen,'' the 28-year-old French player said, tears running down her cheeks. ''That was probably the last little bit of something that was left inside me.

''I've been playing for a long, long, long time, and it's time for me now. It is.''

She's cute, she's good on the court, she's Canadian, and she's in the Finals!

4 July
Eugenie Bouchard’s celebration at the end of the biggest win of her life was barely a celebration at all.

Never mind that she’s the first Canadian to advance to a Grand Slam final. Forget that this is Wimbledon, Bouchard’s favourite event.

In Bouchard’s camp, the mission is not yet accomplished — and won’t be unless she makes even more history in Saturday’s final by defeating No. 6 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in a scrumptious Breakfast at Wimbledon for Canadians.

As Bouchard said in her news conference on Friday, “I’m proud of what I accomplished, but the job is not over.”
