A new project recording the wind patterns across America shows a mesmerising map that could help predict storms.

Wind Map, which has been developed by Google computer scientists shows streams of wind moving across the US and where they are at their strongest.

Updated ever hour from the National Weather Service's forecast database, the map charts streams of wind as they make their way across the whole country.

Users can watch gusts gather on the Sierras and Rockies mountain ranges, then swoosh across the Great Plains towards New York and Canada.

An invisible, ancient source of energy surrounds us – energy that powered the first explorations of the world, and that may be a key to the future, a statement on the website says.

This map shows you the delicate tracery of wind flowing over the US right now.

The two men behind the project have said they want to expand it to the entire planet – and are looking for any source of global wind information, tech news site Mashable reported.
