Microsoft has released an emergency update for Windows after a hole was discovered that would allow hackers easy access to other people’s computers.

The threat level was described as ‘critical’ and gave opportunists the chance to take ‘complete control of the affected system’, the company said.

It added: ‘An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.’

The flaw affected people with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, and Windows RT.

However, the emergency fix appears to have fixed the problem, just in time for the launch of Windows 10 next week.

Most people’s computers should update automatically, but if not you can download the patch here.

Was wondering why I got a message saying to update immediately. I'm running Windows 7 but am wondering why it didn't update automatically.

I'll take my chances with the evil hackers and give this update a pass.
