Winter Olympics: Team GB Told 'Don't Wear Kit'

British athletes travelling to Russia for the Winter Olympics have been advised not to wear team kit on arrival, Sky News understands.

Officials from the British Olympic Association (BOA) warned members of Team GB to keep a low profile while in the country, particularly while travelling through capital city Moscow.

The Olympic athletes' village in Sochi opens today, with the first competitors due to arrive over the next 48 hours.

And a statement issued to Sky News by the BOA said the advice was not in response to any specific threat and was part of a "common sense approach".

"The safety and wellbeing of the Team GB delegation competing in Sochi remains our number one priority," the statement said.

"We are in daily contact with the relevant authorities in the UK including the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

"While we have not received any information or advice suggesting an increase in the threat level, we are taking a common sense approach in recommending that team members wear less overtly branded Team GB kit during their journey to Sochi.

"This advice is similar to guidance being offered to other delegations by their respective National Olympic Committees."

The US team was last week urged to keep a low profile because of security concerns.

The boss of security arrangements, Alexey Lavrishev, has insisted there is no "real threat" to athletes and visitors to the Games, adding security will be strong enough to react to any such threats, if necessary.

I don't think so. Something Will be attempted. Probably a couple of times. Now whether or not the authorities can stop it before there is loss of life is another matter entirely.

You are dealing with a Islamic separatist group that collectively feels they have nothing to lose.

They are willing to send young men and women, and even children to their own deaths in an attempt to kill people uninvolved in the conflict to make their point.

How do you defend against that?
