Would you rather work for a big company or a small company? What are the pros and cons of each situation?

Its harder to move up in a big company because there is so much competition. I suppose you just have to work harder for a promotion (or know the right people) . A big company has a better chance of surviving hardships (like a pandemic) whereas you might not have a future working for a diner owned by a 70 old retired couple.

Given a choice, I'd rather not work at all, regardless of the size, although bigger is said to be better. ;) :p

I've worked for small outfits, like a 'sole proprietor' caterer and another one that owned a liquor store. It had the advantage that you knew who you were working for and exactly what was expected of you. And at neither one did I have to 'take work home with me'. And when the phone rang, it was the owner, or his wife, asking me to come in and cover for him.

I've also worked for large companies, such as what at the time was the fourth largest insurance company in the US, and a state government. They had the advantage that you could, in a way, get lost in the bureaucracy and hide for, well, in my case, 25 years in the state government.

I'd probably rather work for a smaller company that is deemed to stay in business and has similar benefits as large companies.

What was your job in the state government?

I see pros and cons on stuff like Reddit when it comes to working for small companies or mom and pop shops. "Family owned" and "family ran" places too.
Just because it's a family business doesn't mean they'll take care of you as one of their own. They will SAY so, but don't take their word for it. No one will screw you over or betray you harder than family.

Pretty much! Thats why my family is very small. Yeah there is other people in my family that are alive but we don't speak to each other.

Basically, information processing.

Sending it up, or down, or even sideways. Then tracking it, and logging more information about what, if anything, was ever done with it.

Or even simply gathering information, and then doing NOTHING with it, but being able to explain why that was what should have been done with it.

:panic:

I worked for a small company as a Java programmer, was a great job, liked the people there, and then one day, out of the blue, the company went under. No sign of it, no word that it was coming, just done. It was fortunate timing as it lined up with my mother's declining health and the first indications that she had dementia, so I stopped looking for work and became a full time caregiver, but it was a bit jarring losing my job without warning. That's one downside to small companies, they can be very temporary!

Yeah, makes a lot of sense.

It all depends on management for me.
As much as I dislike large corporations, I would pick a great manager over a crummy manager any day of the week.
