It took 9,852 slices of toast, but 600 loaves later, Laura Hadland of Cambridge, U.K., created the world's largest toast mosaic birthday card.

On Oct. 17, Guinness World Records gave its official nod to the unique piece of art in honor of Hadland's mother-in-law, Sandra Whitfield.

Hadland, 27, was able to do this remarkable feat with the help of HTC, a global smart phone designer, and 40 of her close BFFs (best Facebook friends).

It took seven hours to toast the individual pieces of bread into three shades and then place the thousands of slices onto a likeness of Whitfield's face.

I'm thrilled that my best mates in real and in virtual life were able to come together and make our mark on history, while celebrating Sandra's birthday at the same time. It's a birthday card like no other, Hadland said.

Whitfield was properly surprised when she was presented with the toast gift. It was certainly a massive shock. I love toast, but it feels very strange seeing my face made out of it.

And real good came out of the toasty enterprise: The leftover bread was donated to the Warrington Salvation Army, as well as the toasters used to create the individual tiles.

That was very cool and something good also came out of her doing this.

That's amazing! It looks beautiful! How wonderful to TOAST a Mother-in-law instead of slateing her as so many do.
