Your question, in my opinion, is a poorly chosen dichotomy. Would anyone not choose joyful? Would anyone not choose genius?

I do not seem them as mutually exclusive states.

However, the disadvantages of being a "simpleton" outweigh any gain from being joyful.

People don't expect much from the simpletons since they know it would be unrealistic. They just let them be.

Confirmed geniuses, on the other hand, tend to be put under tremendous pressure by the society which expects and often even demands a lot from them, depriving them of the opportunity for a joyful life.
