Doesn't bother me to say sorry if I forgot to say something or overlooked an action I could have done to make someone feel better. In your example, I would've immediately said, "Sorry, I totally forgot. Thanks. 
" and would feel both natural and authentic about it. Sorry feels like an easy thing for me to say, really, and both extinguishes and de-escalates everything.

definitely this,you should never have to apologize for being yourself and true to yourself.
This is the real truth. If the person can't deal with being told the truth to his or her face, it's not my problem and I will never say sorry for doing that.
I do not socialise more because I am not comfortable travelling on account of my accident years ago. If one takes offense for not attending their event I do not apologize.
