Many of us are too eco-conscious to even consider it – but if you leave your PC on all day, it can last far longer.

Experts from Geek Squad have revealed that the idea ISN’T a myth – nor is it out of date.

Turning PCs off and on wears out the components, Geek Squad experts say.

‘If you use your computer multiple times per day, it’s best to leave it on,’ Geek Squad agent Steven Leslie told Digital Trends.

‘Every time a computer powers on, it has a small surge of power as everything spins up, and if you are turning it on multiple times a day, it can shorten the computer’s lifespan.’

Older computers are more at risk due to fragile mechanical components such as hard disks – but even new computers can be damaged by heating up as they turn on and off

For people who use their PCs heavily, the best money-saving option is to leave the PC in Sleep mode most of the time, rather than switching on and off repeatedly.

Do you turn your PC off?

I turn my lap top off after I'm done using it. I didn't know turning it off was bad.

I only turn it off occasionally. I leave it on most of the time. It's a pain in the ass trying to make my mother understand that not only does it not harm it, but it actually makes it last longer. She has this old mentality that computers need to be turned off every night because otherwise they will break in a matter of months. She is so ignorant about technology, it's incredible.

i close my laptop but rarely actually turn it off...

so i guess it goes into sleep mode...

I'm the same, only never turn it off.

I just close my ultrabook without doing anything else. Mine is 2012-hardwared though.
