Portland, Oregon is known for a lot of things, but Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons, grew up in Oregon and based a lot of what's in the show from his hometown. He used street names for characters like Terwilliger, Lovejoy, Flanders and I think one or two others. He even drew a picture of Bart in the cement outside of Lincoln High School downtown. It's about a ten minute walk from where I live.
