This isn't what I would want, but as you broached the subject, I'll mention a classic line from history.

The tomb is that of Raphael the artist (1483 - 1520) in the Pantheon in Rome.

ILLE HIC EST RAPHAEL TIMUIT QUO SOSPITE VINCI / RERUM MAGNA PARENS ET MORIENTE MORI,
"Here lies Raphael, by whom nature herself feared to be outdone while he lived, and when he died, feared that she herself would die."

Thats a pretty cool quote!

A bit much, but OK.

And then you have the exact opposite.

Speaking of legends.
This one says: "Here likes Arthur, the once and future king"

Looks like King Arthur's Tomb is just a grassy nothing these days. Too bad. :glare:

Well... OK, I'll post another "modest suggestion".

The inscription, in part, reads "History is in Mourning".

The gentleman was Leonardo Bruni (1370 – 1444) who is usually described as the first modern historian.

Perscriptiò in manibus tabellariorum est

"I was buried face down so I could see where I'm going."

HAHAHAHAAHA, I like that one!!

How about one that is so understated so as to be at odds with the individual it is about?

I am thinking of Albrecht Durer (1471 - 1528) the German artist.

The one that did this classic image:

Also did this self portrait in the traditional pose of Christ:

And is quoted as saying this:

"Why has God given me such magnificent talent? It is a curse as well as a great blessing."

-and-

"The artist is chosen by God to fulfill his commands and must never be overwhelmed by public opinion."

This is his tomb:

On which this is engraved:
"what was mortal in Albert Durer went beneath this tomb".
