Videos posted online that are set to become viral hits are to be subjected to a new popularity contest under a new service unveiled by YouTube called Slam.

The Google-owned clip website announced the new batch of videos would go head-to-head each week with users asked to vote for their favourite clip.

Unveiling the new concept, the site described the plans as a video discovery experiment. Experts said it was designed to keep visitors attracted to the site to view more content.

According to officials Slam is a game that lets users cast a vote for one of two contrasting videos. They are machine-selected by Google through a series of steps that attempt to predict what the average viewer would like.

YouTube's blog said it was initially launching the service under five categories including comedy, cute, music, bizarre and dance.

Users' votes will determine the position of the clips on a so-called leader board. They are promised points for predicting the crowd favourites, which will allow them to see how they compare to other users.

Sounds interesting. Wonder how well it'll work?

I don't know how it will work. I do know that some of your videos should win if entered!
