Interesting for me since I'm in the U.S. Love to learn about different cultures.

That was cool!!! There's plenty of differences here in the U.S., too.

For instance, cellars are all the norm on the East coast; on the West coast (where land was once plentiful and cheap), no so much. It's also the reason why California has so many "ranch-style" (1-story, sprawling) homes, as opposed to 2 (or more) stories. Low-to-the-ground can help during earthquakes, too.

In New Mexico (where the summers are hot and dry), most 'original' homes didn't have A/C - they all have "swamp coolers". The last thing you'd want is MORE dry air - no matter how cool it is; the swamp coolers add much-needed moisture to the air.

Similar to why homes in England don't have A/C (it's rarely warm enough TO need it), homes in Hawaii don't typically have heaters. They also prefer vinyl floors throughout the home, as opposed to wall-to-wall carpeting in the living room/family room, halls, and bedrooms; sand isn't good with carpet and the floors feel cooler on your feet.

One machine for washing and drying clothes, why have I never heard of that before?

My mom had one of those back in the 70s...she bought it at Sears. Years later, when she tried to get parts to fix it, she was told they stopped making them because they were too unreliable.

Hers lasted her close to 20 years before it needed something. Something tells me "too unreliable" is code for "why sell one piece of equipment with one warranty and one set of parts to go bad, when we can sell two?!?"
