Drives me nuts when my mom looks away when I'm signing to her lol.
Polite? Idk but I usually say, "Stop talking. PLEASE!" Except for my 13 year old, it works

Face to face: Depends on person to person. Even if you're actually busy with something and need to focus all your attention to it, some people just won't let you go, but will actively chase you around and pester you with their excessive talking.
