Is it important for children to have a pet?

Does it do anything for their development as a person?

Google just told me:
Developing positive feelings about pets can contribute to a child's self-esteem and self-confidence. Positive relationships with pets can aid in the development of trusting relationships with others. A good relationship with a pet can also help in developing non-verbal communication, compassion, and empathy.

Definitely not for toddlers. They treat animals like they're another toy. That's why it's common for them to get scratched and bitten.

I do agree that toddlers should definitely not be put in charge of taking care of a pet; but, I think that having a "family pet" offers a good teaching opportunity for parents of tots.
"Be gentle with the cat; don't pound on it like that or it will scratch you." :D
