Is reading to children important?

Do you like reading stories to children?

Would you ever volunteer at a school or a library to read to children?

I've never had bedtime stories read to me or anything remotely like that as a kid. I've had books read to me by teachers and whatnot, but that's the closest I ever got to being read to.

Same as far as I remember.

Same here.

I did read to my kid when she was a toddler though.

I wish I would have made more time reading to my kids before putting them to bed when they were little. I just didn't as much as I should have.

Hindsight.....don't we all have wonderful hindsight?
Too late now, but I have to thank my Mom for knowing the importance of this and reading stories to my kids when they were little. Too many of us don't think about things like that when our kids are the right age.

Reading is very, very important for children. Either being read to or reading themselves, it helps them learn new words, sounds, the use of context clues, it helps to build sympathy with characters and to follow along with a well-structured piece of literature. It is proven that children who are read to improve their cognitive development faster than children who are not read to or not encouraged to read themselves.

I agree that reading is important and used to read to my son at bedtimes when he was little.
