Do you think its wrong to copy and paste a topic from another forum?

Should people rephrase topics into their own words and use the general idea or is it fine just to copy/paste?

It is not fine to copy/paste another persons words without the consent of the author. Doing this is called plagiarism. If you're going to use a topic you see anywhere, use the general idea but rephrase it into your own words.

I am just curious but how is it better to rewrite a thread(simple discussion threads) as opposed to just copy and pasting? I mean the end result is the same as both boards end up with the same topic just reworded for no real beneficial reason outside of not having an angry person at your forum.

I never done it myself(copy and pasting threads from one place to another) just wondered what makes one better over the other?

Because one is plagiarism and the other isnt.

When I see a thread on any forum and I want to post it on mine, I always write in my own words for it. I have never copied what the original poster said for their thread.

I wanted to bump this thread because I noticed that someone is copying and pasting threads from here to another forum as a guest. I logged into Gsmarthub for the first time in a while and noticed that a few threads I created a few days ago here were copied and pasted over there. Here's an example:
I don't know who's doing it but, that doesn't look good for Gsmarthub. This is why I don't allow guest posting on my forum, you can end up with spam.

That is rotten!
Maybe it's not exactly plagiarism because I've come to understand that whatever we say publicly on the 'net' is fair game. If the copy cat is known, though, kind of makes that look like a sleazy person with not much in the way of scruples.
I agree: IMO guest posting is not a good idea.

It depends on what it is.. just about every forum out there has a "Where are you from?" topic, etc.. but what I have done was copy my content on a forum.. and then used that as the jump for the topic itself.. that is because I sometimes copy my stuff from my own forum to a forum that I am currently active at..

But I would never copy content from another forum.. and if I wanted to, I would always ask first.

Anyway, I have had people copy my rules and FAQ, and for the most part, they asked and I always worked with them to tweak it to work with their forum. I have been running my forum for nearly 20 years and in that time a lot of stuff has happened and so, it would make sense for my place to have those rules and FAQ because they were updated with each situation that occured.. and these things were added so that there wouldn't be a repeat of that occurrence.

But if you have a forum that was just launched yesterday, and you have a large wall of rules then it could be off putting to anyone that visits that forum.

I did have an issue with someone who not only copied my rules, FAQ, and ENTIRE forum structure, but they also copied my members too. This particular person was from a post exchange and they actually copied the personal details of my husband and brother onto their forum.. and when they banned me after I confronted them and asked them to remove it, I ended up getting their forum shut down because they harvested the personal details of people who never consented to it.

This idiot actually banned the staff of the host when they initially requested the same thing I did.. and that host later shut down their forum and banned them from the host itself. Eventually the people on the original forum where the exchange was posted, contacted me asking me if it was the same person they had the same problem with on their forums and told me who it was, I confirmed it and that person ended up being banned from that forum as well.
