Did any of you ever get into GITS: SAC?

There's been 5 movies. 2 consecutive seasons. A prequel season called RISE that is missing it's 5th and final episode which was never finished by Funimation. And now currently we have a really bad GITS series that is currently streaming.

Never saw it. Wasn't Ghost in the Shell a flop?

Not the anime series.

The one you're thinking of is the adaptation they did with Scarlet Johansson was a flop. Yes, they should have used an all Japanese cast and stayed true to the source material. They chose not to. As a result the movie bombed.

I got into it when adult swim aired the SAC version of it and really got into the series. I've picked up a few of the past old movies and looking forward to watching them :)

Why did Scarlett Johansson play in Ghost in the Shell?
She liked the script and personally felt that the movie was going to be a hit. The directors felt that she and Margot Robbie looked like Motoko Kusanagi and wanted to match her look. Margot was their first choice. She opted out.

What the director wasn't getting was that Motoko is Japanese and that Motoko's prosthetic body also resembles that of a Japanese woman. They should have put in an all Japanese cast.

This does not look like an American White Caucasian woman. This was Motoko's original look in the first anime film. The fact that fans begged them to use a Japanese cast was already a red flag that this film was doomed to fail.

In the 2000's anime. Again, she still looks Japanese.

My brother saw and he said this anime has a well developed story and has hidden deep meaning involved with it however, this movie is also extremely complicated and most people will probably have trouble following and understanding the story.

I'll probably, at some point, watch it as well.

It took me 6 watches to finally get what was going on with the first film.

Not sure I want to work my brain this hard over a film. Perhaps I'll put this one on the back burner as they say.

They could have at least altered it for an American version if nothing else.
They definitely half assed that one. Like, if they chose not to pick an Asian woman to play Kusanagi, why use CGI and makeup to make her look more Asian? Just go full dive into it.

Another thing to consider, is the irony that the West was upset/offended over the casting, but Japan (including the director of the original film) thought it was cool. They would have been offended if they picked a high profile Asian actress of a different ethnicity, like they did with Memoirs of a Geisha.
