Education can improve lives, but college education has cheated many young people and it seems like just having a good service sector or blue collar job with excellent credit can get you further in life.

Colleges need to be called out for this. They're taking advantage of young kids fresh out of high school. Young people used to go to college to make money, not get robbed by the college and put into debt up to their eye balls in student loans with a shit degree that won't get them the job to pay it off. A lot of business' are now setting the stage for what they will pay and who they will hire whether that person went to college or not. A lot of them don't like the college system telling people what a business "should" pay. They're likely to do on the job training with someone out of high school and pay them much less, than they would with someone who went to college expecting more pay.

Well, people can choose the degree. Myself, I went back a 2nd time and studied math but didn't finish, but had decent grades in Calculus I and I.

But my friend majored in computers expecting a job, but probably the market is swamped with foreigners hired for lower pay, but a big problem also is perhaps his job record, credit score etc

The problem is that life is tough and you can't go into the job market being entitled. Even employers themselves have strongly noted they don't like entitled applicants. But, then again, it's these same companies refusing to give local talent any chance.

Of course, one option with any degree is blogging etc. You can use the net to make the degree pay back, even if employers are rolling their eyes. But it's not easy.
