    It doesn't have to be super-expensive. My laptop cost me $550 or so. My previous one was around the $1300 mark though. >.> Edit: Though as the OP mentions looking at Macbooks, I don't think cashflow is an issue.

    RAM isn't the only deciding factor, especially for video editing. You need to take into account clock speed, and even graphical power. Personally, I hate going less than 6GB.
