Fox News: 2 NYPD officers shot, killed in ambush on cop car
DEVELOPING: Two New York City police officer were shot and killed Saturday after they were shot by a gunman as they sat inside a patrol car. The attack took place in Brooklyn at around 3 p.m., the New York Daily News reported. “The perp came out of the houses, walked up behind the car and lit them up,” a high-ranking police official told the Daily News.

An NYPD spokesman confirmed to Fox News that two officers were shot in the incident and were immediately moved to a nearby hospital. Police later told The Associated Press that both officers died from their injuries..

The New York Post reported that both officers were shot in the head at point-blank range. “It’s an execution,” one law enforcement source told The Post. The gunman just started “pumping bullets” into the patrol car, another source said.

The suspect then fled to a nearby subway station before he shot and killed himself.

The shooting comes at a time when police in New York and nationwide have been criticized by some over the circumstances surrounding the chokehold death of Eric Garner, a black man who was stopped by police for selling loose, untaxed cigarettes.

Demonstrators around the country have protests since a grand jury decided on Dec. 3 not to indict the officer involved in Garner's death, a decision that closely followed a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict a Officer Darren Wilson in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Several New York officers were assaulted during demonstrations, including one that drew thousands to the Brooklyn Bridge.

The president of the police officers union, Patrick Lynch, and Mayor Bill de Blasio have been locked in a public battle over treatment of officers following the decision not to indict the officer in Garner's death. Just days ago, Lynch suggesting police officers sign a petition that demanded the mayor not attend their funerals should they die on the job.

The last shooting death of an NYPD officer came in December 2011, when 22-year veteran Peter Figoski responded to a report of a break-in at a Brooklyn apartment. He was shot in the face and killed by one of the suspects hiding in a side room when officers arrived. The triggerman, Lamont Pride, was convicted of murder and sentenced in 2013 to 45 years to life in prison.

...thoughts and condolences to the families of the officers killed in this senseless act of violence.... :(

Same here. RIP.

What's especially galling about these deaths is that, if the news reports are to be believed, this was an execution-style killing of these officers...this wasn't 2 cops getting shot performing their duties, this was 2 cops who were sitting in their car, eating lunch...and some thug walks up and puts bullets in their heads.

If that's not depraved, what the hell is?

...suffice it to say, there's a lot of heated emotion right now over what happened in New York today; that's just the surface of it...

Boy it is going to get ugly in New York city because of this. Now both sides are going to be looking for payback. Cops are going to be more paranoid then ever. And that communist DeBlasio did nothing to calm the situation down after the ruling.

You know, FWIW, I think every cop in NYC ought walk off the job and say to Mayor Red, "we're not coming back on the job until you resign...and if the city falls apart in our absence, oh, well. You clean it up."

From another source: Two N.Y. police officers slain in apparent retribution attack

A gunman shot dead two New York City police officers in what officials called an "assassination", hours after warning on social media that he planned an attack in retribution for recent U.S. police killings of unarmed black men.

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Sunday ordered flags flown at half staff around the city, hours after the city's main police union harshly criticized the city's first Democratic mayor in two decades for being insufficiently supportive of the department during recent waves of anti-police violence.

The shooter, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Abdula Brinsley, traveled from Baltimore, where police said he had shot and killed his girlfriend, to New York and during the day posted on the social media service Instagram that he would be "putting wings on pigs today," using an anti-police slur.

Baltimore police said they learned of the suspect's posts on Saturday afternoon and called NYPD officials to alert them that digital data showed he had traveled to the city's borough of Brooklyn. But the call came in less than an hour before officials said Brinsley, who was black, shot and killed two officers as they sat in their patrol car near a major housing project.

The officers he killed were Hispanic and Asian-American.

"Although we're still learning the details, it's clear that this was an assassination, that these officers were shot execution style," said de Blasio, who campaigned on a promise to improve relations between the nation's largest police force and minority communities.

The two New York City Police Department officers, Rafael Ramos, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32, had no time to react when Brinsley appeared next to their vehicle, took a shooter's stance and shot both officers with a silver semi-automatic handgun, said NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton.

Brinsley fled to a nearby subway station where he shot himself in the head and died, Bratton added.

ABC News: Cop Killer Told Bystanders "Watch What I'm Going To Do"
A man who fatally shot two New York police officers before killing himself told bystanders to "watch what I'm going to do" moments before the attack, according to police investigators.

The man, identified as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, approached two strangers in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood on Saturday afternoon, asked them about their gang affiliation, told them to follow him on Instagram, and then told them to watch his actions, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said today. He then approached a parked police patrol car and fired four shots, fatally hitting officers Wenjain Liu and Rafael Ramos.

A clearer picture of Brinsley started to emerge as Boyce released details about the shooter's troubled history and his attack on his ex-girlfriend in Maryland that started the violent day, which ended with his suicide on a subway platform. Boyce said that Brinsley gained access to his ex-girlfriend's apartment in the early hours of Saturday morning using a key "he's not supposed to have."

The ex-girlfriend, who Baltimore County Police identified as Shaneka Thompson, called her mother during the confrontation with Brinsley and she overheared part of the argument, but the call ended before Brinsley shot Thompson in the abdomen, Boyce said.

Brinsley fled the scene with Thompson's phone and proceeded to call Thompson's mother multiple times in the coming hours. Investigators have since spoken to Thompson's mother who says that he told her "he shot her by accident and that he hopes she lives," Boyce said. The young woman's mother contacted Baltimore police and they were able to track his journey based on the route of her phone as he took a BoltBus to Manhattan, the chief of detectives said.

Boyce said Brinsley discarded the phone at 12:07 p.m., a little over an hour after arriving in New York. That left police with a less than three-hour gap in his activity between the time he ditched the phone and the moments before he shot the police officers. In addition to finding records of 19 arrests in two states -- Georgia and Ohio -- investigators have spoken to a number of Brinsley's relatives, many of whom said they were estranged from the 28-year-old.

Brinsley's mother lives in Brooklyn and said that he had a troubled childhood and was often violent, Boyce said. His mother said that he had attempted suicide in the past and she had not spoken to him in the past month. She also indicated to police that she believes he has undiagnosed mental problems and she did not know whether he was on medication. According to Boyce, she told police that she was afraid of him.

Boyce said that while Brinsley's social media accounts showed posts expressing anger at the government, flag burning and explicitly mentioning the names Michael Brown and Eric Garner, police do not believe that he had any gang affiliation. Boyce said Brinsley's mother told police he was raised in a Muslim family and did not show any extremist inclinations.

what the fuck is wrong with people? how can someone do something like this?
nut cases, but at least he killed himself and saved the cops the trouble

Newsweek: Petition Calls On NYC Mayor To Resign
A petition calling for the resignation of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on MoveOn.org has received over 52,000 signatures, a response to the murder of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. The petition, created by a group know only as "The people of NYC," reads: With the recent news surrounding the NYPD and other law enforcement agencies around the country, our mayor blasted his own police department by throwing them under the bus. His words and actions on the subject matter of late have to be held accountable. He is unfit to lead this city. He is unfit to have a relationship with his police department for his remaining tenure and he should be taken out of office IMMEDIATELY, with proper protocol to be followed to name a replacement before a special election.

Tensions have been extremely high between the NYPD, its union and the mayor's office since the grand jury decision not to indict Staten Island officer Daniel Pantaleo for the death of Eric Garner. Garner was arrested for selling loose cigarettes by Pantaleo, who put the African American asthmatic man in a chokehold. Garner died following the arrest, due in part to injuries sustained during the arrest. De Blasio publicly said he worried about his son Dante's future with police (Dante is biracial) and said he was "astonished by the [grand jury] decision."

Following the deaths of the two NYPD officers, Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch said the "blood on the hands starts on the steps of City Hall in the office of the mayor."
