A study has revealed that many people would rather forego some of lifeââ¬â¢s most basic pleasures and necessities rather than cope with being off-line.
More than one in five men and women would rather not have sex so long as they were able to stay connected, the researchers found.
Ten per cent would happily give up their car whilst 7 per cent would rather not shower than have no Internet for a year.
The US study is likely to fuel the debate about how much we rely on social networking sites like Facebook and mobile phones to run our lives.
The researchers found that 83 per cent of people questioned would rather give up fast food than not be allowed on-line.
Nearly one in seven would prefer to go without coffee, 43 per cent would quit exercise and some 73 per cent would sacrifice alcohol to stay connected.
Some 84 per cent of respondents would also choose leaving their sat nav at home instead of not being able to surf the web.
The study involved interviews with 1,000 people in each of the G-20 industrialised countries including the US and the UK, so 20,000 in total.
